Vitamin C, also known as L-ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin that your body cannot naturally produce. 

It’s also known to be the safest and most effective vitamin, according to experts. 

While it’s famous for supposedly curing the common cold, that’s not actually the case!

It has many other more incredible benefits than that. 

The most common effect of vitamin C deficiency is scurvy, a disease that results in bleeding gums, loose teeth, and easy bruising, among other things.

Aside from these, vitamin C’s abilities to prevent diseases are being studied. So far, research has discovered that vitamin C may help prevent chronic illnesses such as cancer, tuberculosis, heart disease, and even high cholesterol. 

A lot of research still needs to be done to understand the benefits of vitamin C in our health. What we do know is that vitamin C is essential in keeping the body strong and protected from various diseases. 

Adults aged 19 to 64 need about 40mg of vitamin C daily.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D, also referred to as “calciferol,” is a fat-soluble vitamin that is produced by the skin when triggered by ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sunlight. 

This process is called vitamin D synthesis. This is why vitamin D is also popularly known as “the sunshine vitamin.”

Lack of vitamin D causes rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. 

These diseases result in bones becoming thin, brittle, or misshapen. 

When we say vitamin D, we actually refer to a family of nutrients that have a similar chemical structure.

Their primary difference is that vitamin D2 comes from plant sources, while vitamin D3 comes from animals.

Research suggests that generally speaking, vitamin D3 is the “better” vitamin D between the two.

This is because vitamin D3 seems to be more effective at developing vitamin D status in the blood, and it is known to be more potent than vitamin D2. 

However, a Harvard Medical School article would argue that it does not matter which vitamin D you take as long as you meet the recommended daily allowance, which for adults ranges from 600 IU to 2,000 IU. 

Nonetheless, vitamin D is, without doubt, an essential vitamin that our bodies need to function properly.

You can naturally get all these benefits by simply basking in the sun, even for just fifteen minutes. 

Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1 or thiamin is a water-soluble vitamin, as are all vitamins of the B complex. 

Why is it called vitamin B1? 

Well, the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMM) reports that this is because it was the first B complex vitamin to be discovered. 

In fact, it’s one of the first vitamins of any kind to be classified. 

Aside from these, vitamin B1 has a long list of potential benefits to various health conditions. 

Thiamin is naturally found in meats, fish, and whole grains. It’s also added to bread, cereals, and even baby formulas. 

Eat more of these foods to garner the amount of thiamin you need for a day, which is 1.2 mg for people who are over 18.

Vitamin B2

Vitamin B2 or riboflavin plays a role in many processes in the body, such as body growth and red blood cell production.

Most healthy adults need a little over 1mg of riboflavin daily. 

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 or pyridoxine is one of the B-vitamins from which the central nervous system benefits. 

It plays a role in producing neurotransmitters, specifically serotonin and norepinephrine, and in forming myelin, which allows electrical impulses to be transmitted quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells. 

The daily recommended allowance of vitamin B6 in adults is 1.3mg. 

Vitamin B12

Furthermore, the metabolism of every cell throughout the body relies on vitamin B12 because of its role in the synthesis of fatty acids and energy production. 

This vitamin allows the release of energy by helping the body absorb folic acid. 

Also, the human body makes millions of red blood cells every minute. These cells can’t reproduce properly without vitamin B12. So if the production of red blood cells gets too low because of low levels of vitamin B12. anemia can occur. 

Also, low levels of vitamin B12 can result in irreversible neurological symptoms. 

After learning about six of the thirteen essential vitamins, let’s talk about essential minerals. 

These two groups of minerals are equally important, but the human body needs smaller amounts of trace minerals than macrominerals. So don’t think that smaller amounts mean less important. 

Calcium

Calcium is a very important mineral we need in life. Aside from its popular function--building bones and keeping them healthy--calcium also allows blood to clot, muscles to contract, and the heart to beat.
